Synopsis

How To Be a GIRL (An A to Z Guide for Tweens!) is a visual anthem for the pre-teen nation. Using art, photography, self-discovery, community service and creativity, this is a living manual for inner growth and a road map for world change.

This book educates readers about strong historical and contemporary women of every color, and creates
a space for them to explore their own unique and exceptional attributes...like confidence…. compassion… and tenacity. Along with photographs of strong girls all over the world, young women are presented with thoughtful journaling prompts and challenged with kindness activities and creative community projects.

The Journal Sketchbook is a companion book with inspiring quotes from notable women, plenty of open space to explore the ideas in the book, and activities such as bookmarks they can color themselves, happiness cards to hand out to others, and uplifting community challenges.

These books are a journey, from education…to self-discovery…to action. Young women will take what they have learned and incorporate it into their own lives and communities, blending their stories into the fabric of women’s history.

Using the stories of 26 Extraordinary Women to explore 26 important attributes, readers will learn to see examples of what it means to be:

INNOVATIVE
JUST
KIND
LUMINOUS
MINDFUL

And more importantly, they will begin to decipher how they can be all these things on their own path.

Girls are given an opportunity to:

Learn about amazing role models! Girls will be inspired by incredible women and will learn what characteristics helped them achieve their goals. Examples of the women featured in the book include... Sangeeta Bhatia, Oprah Winfrey, Aimee Mullins, Patsy Takemoto Mink, Corey Maison, Anne Frank, and many more!

Explore how the attributes of these role models fit into their own story! Girls will have space to cultivate all of those important traits. In what ways are THEY just as tenacious and extraordinary in their own life?

Plan how all of that awesomeness can be extended into their own community, with lots of little adventures that add up to big change! Girls can begin carrying all of this knowledge and compassion to others in their communities.

Girls will have the opportunity to continue beyond the books with additional resources, projects and printables on our website.

Along with the companion Journal and Sketchbook, this is the perfect gift book set for any and every young female in your life. Written by two mothers intent on raising fierce, confident and passionate daughters, this is our love letter to them, and to all of you! How to Be a GIRL! empowers and challenges the reader to look to women of the past and present, in order to write their own story of how they will change the future.

About the Author

Julie A. Martin is a visual artist whose photography and fine art work has focused on children and young women for the last 25 years. She has been living against the grain since she was a very young girl, and vowed that if she ever had daughters, she would give them a DIY manual for living an adventurous, unapologetic life as strong, confident females. In 2016, her family sold everything they owned to travel the world in search of a real-world education for their two tween daughters (Zoe, 13 and Delia, 11). Julie and her husband, Larry, expose their daughters to as many different cultures as possible, actively teaching compassion, strength, confidence and curiosity, empowering them to become unwaveringly fearless young women. Julie contributes regularly to Babiekins Magazine in the USA, and Somewhere Between in Australia.

Kiki Fluhr is an artist and business-owner who has worked in the children's design world for over ten years. An Ivy League graduate that really should have gone to art school instead, she has degrees in Education and English, and is convinced a work of art or an amazing book can change the course of someone's life. Kiki is the mother of three shenanigan-loving children, and is hell-bent on raising them to be confident, expressive and kind humans. She has worked with numerous influential bloggers and authors, been a participant in the #changingthefaceofbeauty campaign, and been featured in publications such as Parenting Magazine, Earnshaw's, and South Shore Living. You can find her on the web...nowhere, because she vastly prefers in person contact.
