In Detroit Has Been Good To Me, the companion catalog to his exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts, photographer Bruce Weber explores his ongoing fascination with the Motor City. Weber first visited Detroit in June of 2006 while on assignment for W, a monthly fashion magazine. The idea was to photograph a well-known model--in this case Kate Moss--as a starting point for a much broader exploration of an unfamiliar place, its culture, and, most importantly, its people. While many photographers at that time were recording the vulnerability of Detroit, Weber was completely taken with the vitality of the city and its citizens. This catalog features portraits of a wide spectrum of residents, from students and poets to fashion designers and teachers and musicians. Weber returned to the Motor City again last year to partner with the Detroit-based company Shinola. This time, he sought out familiar faces as well as new individuals who could speak to the city's dynamic evolution. This exhibition catalog includes photographs from these two assignments, presented together with portraits of prominent friends and colleagues who have strong ties to the city. Detroit Has Been Good To Me is softbound, 192 pages, with 130 duotone 23 color plates. It features poems by Naomi Long Madgett, Gil Scott-Heron and Aungelique Patton-James, as well as original essays by Bruce Weber and Nancy Barr, Curator of Photography at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Published by Little Bear Press. Limited edition of 2000 copies.
