A.G.Sheikh is one of Ladakh's leading historian of his generation. Born in Leh in 1936, he spent the early part of his career as a teacher in rural Ladakh, then as a journalist in Kashmir and New Delhi, and finally as a Principal in a High School in Leh. Since taking early retirement , he has concentrated full-time on his writing. During his writing career spanning more than five decades Sheikh has written more than seventy short stories, two novels, one biography and a series of research papers on the history of Ladakh. Some of his stories have been translated into Telugu, Bengali, German, Kashmiri, Hindi and English. His novel Dil Hi To Hey and his book Reflections on Ladakh, Tibet and Central Asia won the Best Book Award from the J&K Academy of Art,Culture and Languages in 1980 and 2011 respectively. His manuscripts Ladakh Ki Seer and Kitabun Ki Dunya have also been conferred with awards by the state Government of India. He is a prominent member of the International Association of Ladakh Studies (IALS) and has contributed to IALS conferences in Denmark, Germany, India, Italy and the U.K.
