Sex: What Your Parents Didn't Tell You encourages parents to end the legacy of silence that leaves so many young people to learn about sex from all the wrong sources.

Author Michael Rittenhouse takes his cue from Theology of the Body, showing that just as all human creatures have an appetite for food, we also have an appetite for sex. And just as our culture is awash in junk food, we’re facing a glut of sexual misinformation distracting us from true fulfillment.

Drawing on truthful teachings from both the secular and Judeo-Christian viewpoints, Sex details a healthy sexuality in terms anyone can grasp. Chapters feature:

  • the critical value of masculinity and femininity, two equal opposites that, put together, make couples whole
  • a summary of natural law, the metaphysics that guides regardless of faith
  • the special problem of Internet porn, which is being quietly overcome in little-noted corners of the Web
  • the latest in scientific findings, which affirm that humans were made to enjoy intimacy and sex, and to mate for life
  • accurate language and reasoning to help you explain what’s good and right about the gift of sexuality

Two qualities differentiate Sex from books already on the shelves. One is its reliance on secular teachings to support truths revealed in Scripture, reaching out to the unchurched as well as the faithful.

The other is the author’s storytelling approach, leading each chapter with his own experiences wandering the desert of a confused culture. His concrete, poignant, and often funny recollections illustrate, in vivid terms, widely held but wrongheaded ideas about sexuality, and their life-changing consequences.

    From the Author:

This project began when I started asking my friends whether their parents ever talked to them about sex
The answer, almost to the last one, was, "No." (The few who said "Yes" said the talk wasn't all that useful.)
So, I wasn't the only one who had to learn everything from TV, peers, and any books I could surreptitiously get my hands on. And I made heartbreaking mistakes, and eventually had to un-learn much of what I thought was right.
Today, as a father of three, I wonder how the next generation would learn. I got my answer in one minute of Googling.
Kids are learning about sex from the Internet.
    It's time we started talking.
But what do we say? When the subject comes up, notice how our voice drops and our words stall and grow vague: Many of us have difficulty talking about sex.
My parents thought of sex as a source of embarrassment, stifling discussion and discouraging questions as if it were a subject that "nice" people just didn't mention. My peers' parents seemed to have the same inhibition.
That can't be right. God invented sex. And everything He made for us is good--right up until we make something bad of it.
With this thought as my inspiration, I started researching and writing a series of essays. Eventually, these became chapters, and the chapters grew into a book.

    From the Back Cover:

Ready to talk to your kids about sex?
    The Internet is.
Many of our own parents didn't talk to us about sex at all. So, what are we supposed to say?
A generation that learned about sex from sitcoms, disco, and Hooters needs a book written for adults. Sex: What Your Parents Didn't Tell You fills that void. Author and journalist Michael Rittenhouse looks to philosophical authorities from Dr. Martin Luther King to C.S. Lewis to the writers of Mad Men, contrasting the lessons of natural law with the SNAFUs in his own personal history.
And, as if we needed science to prove that humans were built to enjoy sex and mate for life, Rittenhouse finds the latest research in support of that--most of which has met with silence by mass media.
Fortunately, readers of Sex: What Your Parents Didn't Tell You will no longer have to wonder where their innate, good sense about sexuality came from. It's part of our nature, and it points us to a spiritual level missed by "liberated" sexuality.
Sex: What Your Parents Didn't Tell You can help you start a new tradition of healthy, integrated, informed sexuality in your family.

Here's what early readers of Sex: What Your Parents Didn't Tell You are saying:
"It's an easy read, interesting and entertaining. The way in which it flows from beginning to end provides a gradual and natural movement toward the spiritual."
"You lay solid groundwork for the relationship between sex and natural law, offering clearly understandable definitions, largely by using very accessible analogies."
"The personal experiences you relay and your candor in conveying them lend enormous credibility to your work, particularly as I and, I suspect, most guys our general age can relate."
"Thank you for taking on this sorely needed conversation."
