Synopsis

In 1907, less than 400 cars were owned in all of Kansas City, but the 20,000 people who attended the city's first auto show in March of that year demonstrated that many more liked the idea, early proof that Kansas City was destined to be a car-crazy town. Railroad bridges were adapted with automobile decks. Wide boulevards connecting the city's parks were built attracting out of town visitors to hire a car and chauffeur to tour this urban scenic drive. Kansas City has been home to the first Ford plant outside of Detroit, the first school for auto mechanics, the first retail center designed for shoppers to arrive by automobile, and the country's first African-American car dealer. A century of automotive firsts later and home to manufacturing, racing, collecting, and more miles of highway per person than any other city, Kansas City has been a city shaped by its relationship with the automobile.

Historian, educator, and museum curator Kyle Yarber, one of Kansas City s foremost experts on its automotive past, has shared stories in interviews by The Kansas City Star and Fox4 News, and as guest on Steve Kraske s Up To Date on KCUR. Travel with him down a narrative road with curves and intersections, dead ends and fast lanes.

About the Author

Kyle Yarber, a sixth generation Missourian, read his first book on automotive history at the age of six. He has Masters degrees in social science and American history, served as the historical director and curator of a Kansas City area auto museum, and belongs to the Society of Automotive Historians. This book comes out of a three-year research project that Yarber describes as "more just started than finished."

Review

"To say Yarber is conversant with Kansas City s automotive history is an understatement." --The Kansas City Star
