Krampusnacht: Twelve Nights of Krampus proved a departure from my usual fairy tale publications, like Beyond the Glass Slipper and Enchanted Conversation: A Fairy Tale Magazine at fairytalemagazine.com. Sure, fairy tales are stuffed with horror and bizarre creatures, but the darker side of Santa? I had to explore.
I learned that Krampus is a well-known folk figure from the Alpine Regions in Europe, and that he is the "enforcer" side of St. Nicholas. A horned figure, with an obscenely long tongue and clip-clopping hooves, Krampus carries a switch and chains bad children up on December fifth each year: Krampusnacht. He sometimes even drags the worst brats to Hell. I knew there were new stories of Krampus out there, just waiting to be told. And here they are.
