Sometimes you eat the forest, sometimes the forest eats you.
What would you do if your child was lost, and—even though you’d never admit this to anyone—it was all your fault? How would you react? Would you be a hero or a coward? And just how would you get your innocent child out of this situation?
These are all questions Gil Anderson faces when his five-year-old son goes missing somewhere in the dark trees at the edge of the family farm. On that fateful day, Gil must travel through his own version of hell to rescue his child before the forest eats them all.
What Gil doesn't know is that his wife and son are also on their own dark, solitary journeys as well...
"In his third novel, speculative-fiction rising star Jasper offers a finely nuanced blend of fantasy and horror." — Booklist

Michael Jasper is fascinated with exploring the places where the normal meets the strange. In pursuit of this fascination, he has published a dozen novels, a story collection, and over six dozen short stories, along with a digital comic with artist Niki Smith. For his day job, he works as a technical writer. He lives with his family in North Carolina, and his website is michaeljasper.net.
Slick salesman Gil and weary, neurotic Melissa purchased their tiny farm for a song, but the bargain came with a hidden price. Their formerly strong marriage, now strained from the stillbirth of their second child, snaps when preschooler Noah wanders into the forest. Each parent attempts a separate quest to retrieve the little boy from a bizarre parallel world of ghosts and monsters that lurks immediately beneath their property. Noah's determined grasp of fairy tale mechanics serves him better than Gil's recurring nightmares or Melissa's blind stumbling through secret doors, but Noah isn't a very convincing child, Gil and Melissa aren't very convincing adults, and the Undercity isn't a very convincing place. Despite interesting explorations of themes like promises and disclosure, Jasper (The Wannoshay Cycle) never manages to bring his story to life. (Oct.)
