Metapsychiatry (“beyond” psychiatry) is a spiritual teaching founded by New York psychiatrist, Thomas Hora, a pioneer researcher into consciousness, whose work transcended traditional psychiatry. It is based on a metaphysical concept of humankind. It draws liberally from the existential teachings of the Christ, the Buddha, Zen masters and the wisdom of mystics and philosophers overtime, as well as from the discoveries of quantum physics, to illuminate its unique approach to the realization of our already-existing wholeness. This teaching is concerned with exploring ideas which substantiate the realm of consciousness as the only reality, the instrument of our enlightenment through which the healing of our bodies, experiences and relationships can occur, individually and collectively. The purpose of our lives is to awaken to our eternal and inseparable oneness with GOD, a wholly benevolent Cosmic Mind and Power—to come to know this Transcendent Reality and to manifest It consciously as fully as possible. Central to Meta-teaching is the idea that thoughts manifest as our reality. Essentially, our every experience is an out picturing of a conscious or unconscious thought — whether in individual experience or in the collective, global experience. “We live in a mental universe,” said Dr. Hora, “and thought is the basic stuff of life.” Metapsychiatry defines a thought as a unit of energy. Based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which informs us that energy can be neither created nor destroyed, but it can be transmuted, we can see that our thoughts tend to take visible form (transmute) as our difficulties, problems, sicknesses, symptoms, pain and disease, as our financial, psychological, emotional, marital or family suffering, as our disappointments, disturbances and frustrations, even as our wars and so-called natural disasters, or — depending on the kind of thought-energies we are entertaining—as our overall well-being and harmonious prospering, individually and globally. Every experience has a “mental equivalent” or a “meaning,” and, if we are struggling with certain problems, Meta guides us to uncover the troublesome thoughts that are manifesting. The contents and quality of our consciousness directly affect the affairs of our lives in the visible world and shape the events of the universe. Meta Meanings is a primer. It intends to summarize the thought system of Metapsychiatry and the way it juxtaposes ideas to reveal truth, i.e., to crystallize and explicate the essential ideas that make up its methodology and to clarify some of its unique vocabulary, especially for the new student. So it is that Metapsychiatry offers us an existential education to supersede our universal miseducation. About the Author

Susan von Reichenbach is a longtime student of Metapsychiatry, having mentored many years with Dr. Hora in New York City. She is the editor of Hora’s book, “One Mind,” and is a spiritual guide in Metapsychiatry and a Meta-class teacher. Susan is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, where Joseph Campbell, her tutor and academic advisor, had a significant influence on her early path. In addition to her work in Metapsychiatry, Susan has enjoyed an internationally acclaimed career as an opera and concert singer.
