Synopsis

When the Rules Aren't Right is a graphic novel for all ages. It is the story of Emma, your basic fed-up teen, tired of parents who only talk about work and money, a self-obsessed older sister, and a brother who's moved back home because he's drowning in student debt. She hates her chores, her know-nothing classes and she's oblivious to the bigger world out there that could use her help. One night, her Nana visits her and takes her in a magical time machine to show her people with real problems....and real solutions. When the Rules Aren't Right offers readers a look at the struggle of workers -- let's them stand in the middle of the action and watch ordinary people achieving extraordinary things.

About the Author

Leslie Tolf led the non-profit benefits arm of the AFL-CIO for the last two decades. She joins 7 super-talented young women illustrators to tell the story about how Labor did more than give us an 8-hour workday.

Review

It's a rollicking, radiant and radical graphic novel primer on labor rights, activism, and people power. Readers of all ages will have a blast traveling through time and place with the vibrantly illustrated characters as they explore major moments in labor history. I love it! --Kate Schatz, author of Rad American Women A-Z and Rad Women Worldwide

This is the labor history book for young people that we've been waiting for. The seven stories of seven times in seven styles are sure to keep readers engaged - and primed to take action for their own futures! --Innosanto Nagara, Author of A is for Activist

This is absolutely the first book I'd pick up to teach students about the labor movement. Beautifully illustrated and a fascinating dive into important issues around the world. --Nick Bertozzi, graphic novel author of Shackleton and Lewis & Clark
