This book contains the three daily Bahá'í obligatory prayers and the prayer for the dead, compiled for the Bahá'ís who recite their prayers in English, Spanish, French, or Arabic . These Obligatory Prayers were revealed by Bahá'u'lláh , the Prophet-Founder of the Bahá'í Faith and the One promised in all the Holy Scriptures. Bahá'u'lláh was a descendant of Abraham and a nobleman who gave up His wealth and power to teach the Word of God. Like Jesus, He was tortured and persecuted by the hands of his oppressors and like Abraham, He was exiled from His native land of Persia. Bahá'u'lláh's mission includes the spiritual unification of the entire human race through eradication of racial, religious and national prejudices, building a peaceful and global society. His teachings remain the remedy for the ailments afflicting the world today. In His writings Bahá'u'lláh says: "That which the Lord hath ordained as the sovereign remedy and mightiest instrument for the healing of all the world is the union of all its peoples in one universal Cause, one common Faith." Bahá'u'lláh's writings present principles such as the Oneness of God, Oneness of religion, Oneness of Mankind, unity as purpose of religion, the independent investigation of the truth, the elimination of extremes of wealth and poverty, the harmony of science and religion, the equality of men and woman, universal education, economic justice, auxiliary international language and universal peace upheld by a world government. Bahá'u'lláh says: "The cause of the creation of all contingent beings has been love.", "O son of man! I loved thy creation, hence I created thee. Wherefore, do thou love Me, that I may name thy name and fill thy soul with the spirit of life." "O Son of the Wondrous Vision! I have breathed within thee a breath of My own Spirit, that thou mayest be My lover. Why hast thou forsaken Me and sought a beloved other than Me?" and again He says:"The purpose of God in creating man hath been, and will ever be, to enable him to know his Creator and attain His Presence." Prayer is one of the greatest means for attaining this purpose. According to the Baha'i writings, "Prayer is conversation with God. It creates spirituality, creates mindfulness and celestial feelings, begets new attractions of the Kingdom and engenders the susceptibilities of the higher intelligence." Bahá'u'lláh says:"To be God’s lover! That is the sole object of life for the Bahá’í. To have God as his closest companion and most intimate friend, his Peerless Beloved, in Whose Presence is fullness of joy! And to love God means to love everything and everybody, for all are of God. The real Bahá’í will be the perfect lover. He will love everyone with a pure heart, fervently. He will hate no one. He will despise no one, for he will have learned to see the Face of the Beloved in every face, and to find His traces everywhere. His love will know no limit of sect, nation, class or race." Bahá’u’lláh says: "It is not his to boast who loveth his country, but it is his who loveth the world.” Regarding the nature of the soul Bahá’u’lláh say: "Know verily that the soul is a sign of God, a heavenly gem whose reality the most learned of men hath failed to grasp, and whose mystery no mind, however acute, can ever hope to unravel. Other ways to acquire the purpose of our life on Earth, the Bahá’ i writings say: "First, through the knowledge of God. Second, through the love of God. Third, through faith. Fourth, through philanthropic deeds. Fifth, through self-sacrifice. Sixth, through severance from this world. Seventh, through sanctity and holiness."Regarding the Obligatory prayers Bahá'u'lláh says: "We have ordained obligatory prayer and fasting so that all may by these means draw nigh unto God, the Most Powerful, the Well-Beloved." “Fasting and obligatory prayer are as two wings to man's life. Blessed be the one who soareth with their aid in the heaven of the love of God, the Lord of all worlds.”

Mirza Husayn-‘Alí known as Bahá’u’lláh, meaning the “Glory of God” in Arabic, was born in November, 1817, in Persia, to a wealthy minister. He did not attend school, yet from a very early age, he displayed extraordinary knowledge and wisdom. As a young man, Bahá’u’lláh renounced a position at the king's court and chose to devote His energies to the care of the poor and the oppressed. With His acceptance of the religion of the Báb, whose teachings had swept through Persia two decades before, Bahá’u’lláh embraced imprisonment and exile for the rest of His life. In 1850, the Báb was publicly executed and nearly 20,000 of his followers were massacred for their religious beliefs. In 1852, Bahá’u’lláh and some other followers of the Báb were arrested and confined in a notorious underground dungeon. Bahá’u’lláh's feet were placed in stocks and his neck was weighed down by chains exceeding 110 pounds. It was in this dungeon that He became aware of His mission as a Manifestation of God. After four months of intense suffering, Bahá’u’lláh—now ill and utterly exhausted, was exiled forever from His native land. First to Baghdad (Iraq), then to Constantinople (Istanbul) and then to Adrianople (Edirne) and finally He was sent and imprisoned in the notorious prison-city of Akká to suppress the growth of the cause that he was promoting. At the end of April 1863, shortly before leaving Baghdad, Bahá’u’lláh and His companions resided for twelve days in a garden which He named Ridván, meaning “Paradise”. There, Bahá’u’lláh declared Himself to be the One heralded by the Báb—God’s Messenger to the age of humanity’s collective maturity, foretold in all the world's scriptures. Bahá’u’lláh wrote many books, tablets and prayers, among them are the "Most Holy Book", the "Seven Valleys", the "Book of Certitude" and the "Hidden Words". He also wrote tablets and letters to the most powerful religious and rulers of the time, announcing the advent of the day of God, and admonishing them to uphold the principles of justice and unity. After 40 years of suffering and imprisonment, Bahá’u’lláh passed away on May 1892 and left His followers, many of the governmental leaders and intellectuals who learned to know Him with sorrow. His shrine is in Israel, not far from Nazareth. With the ascension of Bahá’u’lláh the revelation of the verses of God came to an end and the bounty of the release of spiritual energies ceased, never to reappear before the lapse of at least a full millennium.
