What do players talk about in the huddle? Why did the coach choose pass instead of run? What plays are reviewable? After Further Review answers these questions and hundreds more. From coin toss to conclusion, learn the game's tactics, formations and terms. Understand the history that shaped it. And gain new appreciation for its oft-overlooked nuances--all from an expert who has spent his life on the sidelines and in the press box.
The book is easy to understand, spelling out technical aspects of the game in a way that both the beginner and experienced spectator will appreciate. After Further Review is organized in chapters in order of how the action happens in the game: offense, defense, and kicking situations. There are descriptions of qualifications and responsibilities required for each player's position on offense and defense. Humorous quotes and anecdotes are sprinkled throughout the book, highlighting important features of the game. Included are chapters on mistakes coaches and players make in playing football and those that fans make viewing the game.
The final chapter is a "game plan" for spectators, featuring play-by-play strategies for watching and discovering the interesting action that takes place away from the ball carriers, throwers and catchers--action often overlooked by commentators. There is also a comprehensive glossary of terms and situations, making the book an excellent reference for fans who want to get the most out of their football viewing experience, at home or at the stadium. The book is aimed at rookie fans, experienced enthusiasts and those who might be too embarassed to ask questions.

Ken Woody is a former Fox Sports football commentator who played defensive back, receiver and kicker for Oregon from 1966 to 1970. He coached college football for 18 years, including stints as an assistant at Oregon, Washington, Washington State and Utah State, and was head coach at Whitman College and Washington University-St. Louis. “I learned football working under many great coaches, among them Len Casanova, Jerry Frei, John Robinson, Bruce Snyder, George Seifert, and Ron Stratten at the University of Oregon, Jim Owens at the University of Washington and Jim Walden at Washington State University. Most of my coaching experience was on the offensive side of the ball with quarterbacks, receivers and kickers although as a head coach I coached defensive backs, linebackers and offensive line. I achieved my first goal of being the youngest head coach in college football at the age of 26 and throughout my career in coaching and outside of it, as a journalist and broadcaster, have experienced how exciting and gratifying it is teaching the game to others. One vivid memory as the (then 7th leading scorer in Oregon history) kicker for Oregon:” being booed by 34,000 people, including my mother.” Bounced back to kick winning field goals against Washington (twice) USC, Air Force and a last-minute onside kick in a comeback win over UCLA, who had a 40-21 lead with 3:50 left in the game. Coach had 18 years experience college coaching: Assistant, University of Oregon-1 year—quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, kickers Assistant, University of Washington-3 years—quarterbacks, receivers, kickers Head Coach, Whitman College-2 years Assistant, Utah State-1 year, tight ends Assistant, Washington State-9 years, quarterbacks, receivers, kickers Head Coach, Washington University-St. Louis-2 years Academic Athletic Counselor-Washington State University-1 year Athletic Director, Lewis-Clark State College-2 years Television Analyst-Color Commentator, KCPQ (Seattle-Tacoma), Fox Sports Northwest, 15 years Magazine Columnist-Football Analyst, Ducks Illustrated, 5 years Newspaper Columnist-Football Analyst, Eugene Register Guard, 9 years Currently columnist, blog analysis, online Eugene Register Guard, 6 years Coached Mark Rypien, MVP of Super Bowl XXVI for the Washington Redskins win over Buffalo Bills Coached Mike Wilson, WR San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl Champions
