Reviews

PreSchool-KAThis appealing picture book consists of nine simple riddles. A rhyming question is presented on the right-hand page and the single-word answer is revealed when the page is turned. The riddles are basic and young listeners will surely guess the answers: "What has fur, a tail, whiskers, and claws? It likes to catch mice with its four little paws." Corwin's quilted-fabric collage illustrations are soft and comforting. Bright shapes, touches of embroidery, and colorful buttons add tactile, three-dimensional qualities to the pictures. The question and answer pages of each riddle share the same background material, connecting concepts, and observant viewers will discover illustrative clues along with each poem. Pair this promising storytime selection with Stephanie Calmenson's What Am I? (HarperCollins, 1989) and Toby Speed's Water Voices (Putnam, 1998) for a riddle-iculous preschool program.AShawn Brommer, Southern Tier Library System, Painted Post, NY
