Review
This compact, boxed book collection contains three very different Eric Carle board books, all illustrated in his well-loved painted-cut-out-paper style. The Mixed-Up Chameleon is about what happens when a chameleon (who can change color at will, naturally) discovers that it can change shape, too. After a visit to the zoo it decides to become a flamingo, and a fox, and an elephant, among other things, and turns into a very odd creature indeed before discovering that it needs to change back into a chameleon in order to catch flies. Do You Want to Be My Friend? is an almost wordless story about a mouse who searches for friendship with non-mice--including a horse, a lion, and a snake, before finally meeting a more suitable companion... another mouse. The absence of text from most of these panels leaves plenty of room for story participation. The Secret Birthday Message is a more sophisticated tale, using actual cut-out sections to lead you through an entirely human adventure. A cryptic message leads a little boy into a cave, through an opening, to the place where his birthday present is waiting. A solid introduction to the beloved Eric Carle for the toddler set.
