Within the folds of Meredith Publishing, Better Homes and Gardens conscientiously practices recycling. Which means that if readers subscribe to the company's various magazines or browse through other Better Homes books, chances are great that repeat photographs (especially) and information will be encountered. Yet the ideas in this huge portfolio of remodeling tricks and tips are worth a second look. Although the actual organization of materials could be improved, each chapter follows a predetermined outline: stating the problem, identifying solutions, presenting several pictures and at least one case study, and discussing the basics. Of particular note are the sections on architectural additions ("bump outs" in trade lingo) and recycled retreats, including actual tales of home owners renovating a church, store, schoolhouse, old cabin, and historic New England octagonal house.
