"Getting up early and walking to my boring school is not exactly fun," complains young Max. "I thought of something you can do to make it more interesting," replies his lively botanist uncle, Bill, who gives Max a sack of flower seeds and tells him to sprinkle the contents along his school route. Max follows through, and weeks later spies green shoots poking through the sidewalk cracks. Eventually, the whole town is awash in Max's flowers, Max's class collects and studies the blooms, and the mayor surprises Max with a special beautification award. As in Sarah Stewart's The Gardener (1997), the child who transforms a city with flowers makes a powerful story, and Corderoch's detailed watercolor-and-pencil artwork adds high appeal. The story is set in a picturesque European village, and the illustrations highlight both the wild beauty of the plants and the pride Max feels when he makes a difference. Kids will linger over the detailed scenes, especially the view of Uncle Bill's cozy botany lab, housed inside a traveling camper van, where science seems like magic. Engberg, Gillian
