The cattle guard is a U.S. folk invention that will always be associated with the cattle industry on the Great Plains. The gate functions as a fence and a gate but allows traffic to pass through unimpeded. The cattle guard is usually wooden poles or iron poles spaced in parallel fashion over a pit or depression in the roadway for which cattle cannot gauge the depth and are afraid of stepping on the poles for fear of falling in the pit. The author traces the origins of the cattle guard to England, then to the US with trains in the 1800s and finally to the Great Plains in 1905. This book is full of farm and ranch stories that pertain to framers, ranchers, and oilmen on the Great Plains. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket. Seller Inventory # 015423
