British poet and editor Enright ably treats an eclectic selection of topics in these collected essays on literature. The 17 pieces appeared originally in the New York Review of Books and leading English periodicals. They range from succinct discussions of Flaubert (whose mother chided his ``mania for sentences'') and other continental writers to thoughtful reviews of oriental classics and the achievement of E.B. White. The standout is ``Scholarship, Sexship, Shitship: Misadventures Among Words,'' in which Enright wittily appraises the use and misuse of language in our times. Recommended. Starr E. Smith, Georgetown Univ. Lib., Washington, D.C.
