Synopsis

Each era fosters its own myths, and in the process Elizabeth Siddal, the coppery-haired poet and painter changed from suicidal waif to ideal gentlewoman to feminist. Here, Jan Marsh enlarges on the life of one of the subjects of her earlier work, Pre-Raphaelite Sisterhood, and delineates the true story of Siddal as an artist in her own right.

Terracotta cloth binding clean and bright with slight pushing to spine tips. Minor marking to page edges. Contents clean and white without bookplates, inscriptions, foxing or other markings. xi, 244 pp. Illustrated. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Elizabeth Siddal, lover and wife of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, is the most elusive figure of the Pre-Raphaelite era. 'The Legend of Elizabeth Siddal' focuses less on the 'real' woman, whose personality cannot be firmly established, than on the changing images of her. The manner in which image reflects the standards and ideals of successive generations is examined in Jan Marsh's witty and lucid text. Examples are drawn from the Freudian revolution of the 1920s, the cinematic melodrama of the 1930s, and the sexual liberation of the 1960s. Each of these eras fostered its own Elizabeth Siddal myth and in the process the coppery-haired poet and painter, who died at the age of thirty-two, changes from suicidal waif to feminist to ideal gentlewoman. Marsh's work provides its own insight into this enigmatic personality and reassesses her contribution to Victorian art and literature.
