In her first memoir, An Iranian Childhood (Serpent's Tail, 1993), Kurdish author Kordi, who lost her sight owing to lack of medical care during a childhood illness, traced her upbringing in rural Iran by a neglectful mother and other family members. Here she responds to criticism of that bitter portrait with her mother's side of the story: a straightforward, stylishly bland tale of a young woman, Mahi, who endured two forced marriages and the ceaseless scramble for basic subsistence finally to attain some modicum of independence by moving with her children to Teheran. Kordi takes great pains to balance the horrifying aspects of tribal culture?the selling of daughters as young as 12 into marriage, marital rape, and beating?with warm depictions of a close-knit community of supportive wives and sisters. While the memoir concludes with the wedding of a young girl, described as feeling love for her stranger husband, and Mahi's rehabilitation into the bosom of her family, this idyllic revision does not sit easily or convincingly with the reader.
