Soon after her mother's death, a woman returns to the village where she grew up to reflect on her childhood years. Atmospheric and dreamlike, this novel by one of the classic writers in 20th century Italian literature is a Proustian journey of self-discovery and a poignant evocation of Italy at the beginning of the century.

The Penumbra ($17.95 paperback original; May 26; 240 pp.; 0-7043-8071-4): The first English translation of a prolific and much admired Italian novelist (now in her 90s) offers the initial volume of the semiautobiographical trilogy that Romano began publishing in 1964. Its an episodic, kaleidoscopic fictional memoir whose unseen narrator, upon returning to her native village following the death of her beloved mother, finds herself ``reliving,'' vicariously, such events as her parents' wedding, in addition to her own formative experiences. There's little narrative tension, but the book is rich in compact portraits of eccentric characters (such as the memorable elderly dwarf Tota) and affectionate memories of her ``artistic,'' nurturing family. Low-keyed but immensely likable. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
