Synopsis
There is much more to Aberdeen than granite and Union Street. This guide introduces visitor and native to the traditions and character of the City through its buildings. And what buildings; ranging from ancient St. Nicholas Kirk of St. Machar's Cathedral, through the classical New Town of the 18/19th centuries, and the confident Victorian contributions in the Town House, Salvation Army Citadel and Mariachal College, to the oil company headquarters and bright industrial sheds. Terraced houses, cottages, mansions, tenements and bungalows are all described within. The guide is enlivened by anecdotes and comments by native and visitor - including Daniel Defoe, Dr. Johnson and Lord Cockburn. This guide describes several hundred different buildings and locations illustrated with almost 300 photographs, prints or drawings.
