Synopsis

Culhwch and Olwen is one of the earliest tales contained in the so-called "Mabinogion" collection preserved in the White Book of Rhydderch and the Red Book of Hergest. It is the earliest surviving tale in any language in which King Arthur and his warriors play a prominent role. In 1988, Rachel Bromwich and D. Simon Evans co-edited a Welsh-language edition of Culhwch and Olwen based on Sir Idris Foster's pioneering work on this story. Apart from a very few minor corrections, the text of the tale is exactly as printed in the Welsh edition, but this English edition provides an extended introduction, full notes on the language and subject matter of the text, and an enlarged glossary. Scholars and students alike are sure to welcome the publication of the first scholarly edition in English of this important tale. (from the dust jacket)
