R. George Thomas was educated at Bargoed Secondary School and later at University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire, Cardiff. After war service in Iceland, India and the Far East he returned to teach mediebal and eighteenth-century literature at his old college, eventually as Professor of English Language and Literature there until his retirement in 1980.
