'...the two sleuths stand out as realistically portrayed, mature characters...an author of considerable promise.' - PUBLISHERS WEEKLY. When historic Springwood Hall is turned into a hotel, a number of noses are put out of joint locally. The gala opening, to which, in a spirit of compromise, all the disaffected parties have been invited, promises to be quite an event - not least because the amply upholstered Hope Mapple is planning a disruptive streak protest. However, Hope is upstaged by the discovery of a recently murdered body in the wine cellar, and the occasion turns horribly serious for Chief Inspector Markby and his guest Meredith Mitchell.

Ann Granger has lived in cities all over the world, since for many years she worked for the Foreign Office and received postings to British embassies as far apart as Munich and Lusaka. She is now permanently based in Oxfordshire.
Judith Boyd's warm, slightly vibrato voice heightens the appeal of this delightful addition to Granger's popular English mystery series, featuring Chief Inspector Markby and his friend, Meredith Mitchell. This time the grand opening of a new country hotel is marred by the discovery of a recently murdered body on the premises. Trouble all around, and much fun for the listener. Boyd's mastery of regional accents highlights the characters' varying backgrounds. Her careful pacing lets the story unfold with a natural rhythm--one can almost follow the characters around in one's imagination. The only criticism is that occasionally Boyd's narrative voice cannot be distinguished from the voice given to Mitchell, but the slips are not a big problem. Prepare to curl up and listen happily.
