William Arkwright, the master of Liversedge Mill, was a proud, lonely man. The mill was his only interest in life, but it was in trouble - the Luddite rebellion was sweeping through the north and workers were conspiring to smash machines. Mary Lister, who'd taken the post of governess to Arkwright's young step-sister Caroline, arrived in Liversedge on a night of violence and death. During the stormy weeks that followed, Mary became torn between her sympathy for the poor and her unwilling admiration for the Master of Liversedge.
