Synopsis

Kathy Kelly, born in the heart of Glasgow's tough East End Barras Market, is part of a family riven by favoritism and jealousies, by slights, real and imagined. She grows up with a sharp wit and a quick temper, engaging in verbal warfare with those who cross her, her father, her grandmother, the local parish priest - Kathy Kelly takes no prisoners. When she reaches a crisis in her life, Kathy moves to the Western Highlands to start all over again.  But family ties drag her back to Glasgow, where she is forced to look at things afresh, at past events and people she thought she knew so well, and eventually begin the search for her missing brother, a search which will result in an extraordinary, devastating discovery.

From the Publisher

Born in the heart of Glasgowšs tough East End, Kathy Kelly comes from a family riven by conflict and jealousies. With her sharp wit and a quick temper, she verbally spars with all who cross her, including her reproving grandmother and her self-pitying, hard-drinking father. Kathy has learned to fend for herself ‹ unlike her brother Peter, who fled as soon as he was able. But after a crisis, Kathy decides to move to the Western Highlands and begin again. Here, she finds work ‹ and a home ‹ with an eccentric couple whose easygoing marriage and zest for life is a welcome relief from the turmoil shešs left behind. But just as shešs enjoying her new-found peace, her family ties drag her back to Glasgow. There, forced to look at things afresh, Kathy begins the search for her missing brother ‹ a search that will end in an extraordinary and harrowing discovery.
