Frank McDonald was born in Michigan, raised in France and England, educated at the University of Notre Dame, University of Chicago and Oxford University. In 1967, he was appointed Executive Administrator of the Independent Republic of Anguilla in the West Indies. Thereafter, he became a Fellow of the Institute of Current World Affairs covering the Caribbean and Cuba where he taught at the University of Havana. In Cuba, he was arrested, charged with espionage, imprisoned, and held in solitary confinement for 15 months. After his release he lectured at the New School of Social Research. In 1972, he found an old ruin in Kinsale, Ireland, which he restored while researching and writing Provenance. In 1995, he became CEO of Biomatrix, a biological counter terrorism consulting group to federal, state and local government agencies. Afterward, he lived on Block Island, Rhode Island and curated the Spring Street Art Gallery. He now resides in Boston with his life partner, Elizabeth Gavett.
