The 19th century was the golden age of natural history. Victorian readers seemingly could not get too much of the adventures of these travelers to far-off and exotic places. Charles Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle was just one of this genre. After two useful preliminary chapters, the author introduces the reader to eight of these traveler-scientists. Unfortunately she has had to compress the whole of each lifeoften long and interestinginto little more than a dozen pages. Though she has done this with a good deal of skill, the reader would often like a slower pace and/or more detail.
