9780710068989: The Gift. Forms and Functions of exchange in archaic Societies

Synopsis

Since its first publication in English in 1954, The Gift, Marcel Mauss's groundbreaking study of the relation between forms of exchange and social structure, has been acclaimed as a classic among anthropology texts.

A brilliant example of the comparative method, ?The Gift? presents the first systematic study of the custom―widespread in primitive societies from ancient Rome to present-day Melanesia―of exchanging gifts. The gift is a perfect example of what Mauss calls a total social phenomenon, since it involves legal, economic, moral, religious, aesthetic, and other dimensions. He sees the gift exchange as related to individuals and groups as much as to the objects themselves, and his analysis calls into question the social conventions and economic systems that had been taken for granted for so many years. In a modern translation, introduced by distinguished anthropologist Mary Douglas, ?The Gift ?is essential reading for students of social anthropology and sociology.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Mauss, Marcel. The gift : forms and functions of exchange in archaic societies / with an introduction by E. E. Evans-Pritchard ; translated by Ian Cunnison. London: Cohen & West, 1970. Reprint with corrections. Paperback, VG. Small creases and mild shelfwear to cover edges. Inside front cover with ownership signature. xiv, 130pp. Top edge of page block a little dust-stained; contents clean and bright. Marcel Mauss (10 May 1872 10 February 1950) was a French sociologist and anthropologist known as the "father of French ethnology". The nephew of Émile Durkheim, Mauss, in his academic work, crossed the boundaries between sociology and anthropology. Today, he is perhaps better recognised for his influence on the latter discipline, particularly with respect to his analyses of topics such as magic, sacrifice and gift exchange in different cultures around the world. Mauss had a significant influence upon Claude Lévi-Strauss, the founder of structural anthropology. His most famous work is The Gift (1925).
