Hardcover with dustjacket. Condition: Gut. XIII, 277 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, Buchrücken ausgeblichen, Flecken auf Kopf- und Vorderschnitt, Bleistiftanmerkung auf Vorsatz, vereinzelt Anstreichungen und Anmerkungen im Buch / dust jacket rubbed, spine faded, stains on head and fore-edge, pencil annotation on endpapers, occasional markings and annotations in book. - This is the first of two volumes dealing with the work of the Latin writers of the first and second centuries A.d. Edited by Professor D. R. Dudley, it consists of a varied collection of essays on the literary figures of the 'Silver Age' of Latin literature. The Latin authors of the 'Silver Age' had two handicaps in common: they lived under a capricious autocracy and they wrote under the shadow of the great Augustans. The contributors to this volume cover a wide range of writings which arose in response to this shared situation. The book includes essays on Seneca, as man and as philosopher, who diffused a popularized Stoicism through the media of tragedy and philosophical tracts. The views of Lucan on the Caesars are discussed, and the influence of this writer on English literature is assessed. There are chapters on structure in the satires of Persius, on translating Petronius, and an essay each on Statius and Martial. All these authors had a substantial influence on later European literature. The epigram, for example, a form perfected by Martial, was used by the English poet Dryden, and Petronius' Satyriconthe torso of a gigantic novel of low life and conspicuous wasteis, in content, style and outlook, congenial to our times. This volume will therefore prove to be of considerable value to students of both Classical and later European literature. / Contents Editors' Foreword T. A. DOREY and D. R. DUDLEY Introduction D. R.
