This book describes the picture of reality given by Newton, and the development of the later picture of reality given by field theory. In telling this story, the author explains what problem each scientist faced, and how the process of solving them led to new discoveries. By this method he gives unique insight into the understanding of Einstein’s special theory of relativity, as he explains exactly what problems led to the invention of the theory, and exactly where Einstein’s solution differed from his predecessors’. A similar analysis is given of the discoveries of Faraday, Maxwell, Hertz and Lorentz. The problem-oriented approach of the book, originally published in 1974, enables the reader to share in the original creative process, and in the excitement of the discoveries. It puts physics problems into new perspective and discusses the philosophical implications of the history - an illuminating account of a great episode in the history of thought.

Imaginal Books
(Sardent, France)

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Spine a bit faded. From the preface: " There is a long antimetaphysical tradition, the latest expression of which is the belief that the search for a world picture is old fashioned, since the advent of quantum theory. I do not agree with this view and this book is, in one respect, one long argument against it. The story of the development of field theory shows, I think, that the search for a true world picture has not been an accidental side feature of the growth of science, but rather a central feature of its most important advances. As well as reporting on the development of field theory, there are several theses I argue for. Two, concerning scientific method, I have just mentioned. A third concerns Faraday's metaphysics. There are four main ideas of material substance I discuss in the book: those of Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, and Einstein. The main theme of the book is how the latter three developed. My thesis is that Faraday's idea of material substance is different from, and in some ways superior to, those of Newton, Maxwell, and Einstein. This point is developed throughout the book, and is concluded in the last two sections of the book. ". Seller Inventory # 000012
