In this English poet's ninth collection, we find poems ranging from reminiscences of boyhood and early manhood to a long visionary poem about the tragic history of the Jewish people. The poet's great strengths are descriptive metaphor and a rich, sinewy diction; he strives to "load every rift with ore." His chief weakness is that the poems can be so loaded with fine phrases as to become opaque and uncommunicative. Nevertheless, his tragic vision and the strength he finds in it are quite compelling. Something of his ferocity may be seen in these lines, spoken by Herod about Salome: "I/ Come on spidery male/ legs, a little haired spasm pure/ as a egg, to take my ounce/ of delirium/ with hers . . ./ In excruciating heat I run pure/ of God's foundry, and cool in a falling/ eyeless shape.
