Synopsis
The first comprehensive history of the development of the model railway from a tinplate toy to a meticulous miniature of the original. The book documents the earliest models, using the author's personal collection of catalogues, and the gradual growth of the industry until 1939. The book is international in scope, covering manufacturers in every major country and discusses the different gauges and techniques which developed. The book is both an entertaining document of social history and an invaluable reference work for the modeler. An appendix provides concise histories of the principal model railway company during this time. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos showing the trains, tracks and bridges, and trackside structures (such as signals, stations, and sheds). Originally published in German in 1962, this excellent English translation was done by noted British railway author C. Hamilton Ellis. 216 pages.
