The 1974 Ian Allan British Railways Diesel Locomotives booklet provides, as ever, a snapshot of the state of BR diesel fleet at the date of publication, in this case checked to 29th December 1973. As we remarked in our listing of the 1974 Locoshed volume, the 1974 editions are of more than usual interest because of the ongoing TOPS (Total Operations Processing System) renumbering scheme, thus in addition to all the usual information about the technical specifications of the locomotives, the locomotive listings include the former numbers in brackets, providing what must have been an excellent boon to trainspotters at the time as well as still being a handy guide (if not infallible) to enthusiasts today. This copy is in all round very good condition, with no underlining, However a reasonable number of listings have been ticked in pencil and faint pencil notes have been added in a number of places. Some of these are straightforward additions or amendments to the text, but others defy our interpretation, None detract from the overall quality of the book and could be removed by the use of an eraser.
