Although much of the Southern Region, in particular the London suburban lines and the main lines to Portsmouth and Brighton, had been electrified before nationalisation, Southern Region still possessed a considerable steam locomotive stock in 1948. Main line steam was destined to survive on the main lines towards the West Country until 1967, outlasting steam on both the Eastern and Western regions. At the apex of the Southern's steam locomotive fleet were the Bullied Pacific designs, locomotives that were seen the length and breadth of the SR network, from the Cornish branch lines to the main lines of Kent, Sussex and Surrey. Other locomotive types, however, such as the Beattie Well Tanks and the Adam Radial Tanks, were to be found only in specific locations, where they were associated with single routes. In his second book for Ian Allan Publishing to cover the Southern Region, Roy Hobbs follows on from the very successful On Southern Lines with a further exploration of the great variety of steam operation to be seen in Southern England in the years leading up to the withdrawal of the final Southern Region steam in 1967. Drawing upon his own collection, as well as photographs taken by many of the leading railway photographers of the period, the author provides a nostalgic trip back to the late 1950s and early 1960s when Britain's railway network was much more extensive than it is today and when steam seemed a fixture in the landscape.
