Synopsis
Over the decades railway modellers have made enormous strides in their quest for realism in replicating the age of steam on their layouts. The quality of the rolling stock, scenery and electronics has generally improved immeasurably in recent years.There is still, however, one area where many layouts fall down and that is the manner in which they are operated. This title sets out to address this problem and provide a guide to lead modellers away from some of the basic errors which are often made and towards the correct operating practices. Author Bob Essery does this by encouraging modellers to look to the real thing, the full size railway, to learn the correct operating procedures which can be applied to their layouts.The topics explored in the book's authoritative text are portrayed in a large number of photographs. These illustrate both aspects of operation on the full sized railway and show how these can be replicated by giving examples from quality model layouts.Among the many common errors which the book discusses are incorrectly placed signs, trains running without brake vans, inappropriate locomotives hauling trains which they would never have handled on the prototype and unlikely track formations. There are many aspects of the steam railway which can never be faithfully replicated on a model railway, but the book focuses on those which can be successfully modelled and shows how this can be achieved.
