How to Be a Cat - Hardcover

9780711212619: How to Be a Cat

Synopsis

Being a cat has to be carefully taught, as this mother cat's words to her kittens demonstrate. Yawning, stretching, twining round legs, slow careful washing from the ears downwards - everything a young cat needs to know is presented in easy-to-learn verse form. Pam Martins' appealing artwork captures the charm of Mary Hoffman's words of wisdom, in a book that will delight every dedicated catlover.

About the Author

Mary Hoffman is a highly acclaimed journalist and writer who has campaigned against sexism and racism in children's literature since 1971. Pam Martins trained at Brighton College of Art and became an Air Mechanic and a mother of four before starting work professionally as a painter and sculpter. She paints in watercolour and draws from life at home in Salcombe, Devon where her slate-carving workshop is open to the public. She has exhibited in many West Country galleries and at the Mall Gallery in London. She is also a member of the Society of Feline Artists.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 - A mother cat gives her five kittens instructions about proper feline behavior, including yawning, climbing, catnapping, stalking, pouncing, and purring. The fluid narrative consists entirely of Serena's authoritative and patient comments to her little ones. Irreverent humor presents itself as she gives washing directions: "Finally, put one leg up in the air and lick your...oh dear, Domino's fallen over." While Martins's watercolors are lively, they are pedestrian and the book design is uninspired. An additional purchase where feline tales are popular. - Rachel G. Payne, Brooklyn Public Library, NY
