Gardening doesn't have to be nice. At the beginning of the twenty-first century the gardens with the most contemporary feel revel in a crisp, clean style with harder planting and landscaping, and a water-wise attitude. In Sharp Gardening, Christopher Holliday looks at the role of architectural foliage, and how it can be used to provide accents in planting schemes, and also as the main substance of gardens. Jerry Harpur's stunning photographs show- case both spiky plants and the gardens that incorporate them most successfully.

With a keen interest in spiky plants, Holliday argues that gardens dont have to look "nice"---packed with delicate roses and pretty clematis. There is much to be said for a crisp, clean-lined planting style featuring swords, straps, and spikes. This book presents a careful selection of plants that are spiky, sharp, or brittle, whether in their stems, leaves, or flowers, so that gardeners can choose new and exciting plants that work well in their landscape. From xeriscapes to maritime gardens and everywhere in between, all adventurous plantspeople will find fresh ideas for adding a little excitement to their garden.
Christopher Holliday holds a NCCPG collection of phormiums in the UK. His articles have been published in Gardens Illustrated, Garden Inspirations and The English Garden. His garden in Cumbria has been featured in the Daily Telegraph, Country Life and The Times and Frances Lincoln's Gardens by the Sea, as well as in Gardeners' World (BBC) and Muck & Jeff (Granada). He contributed a chapter to the National Gardens Schemes celebratory Making Gardens and is press officer to the NGS in Cumbria. Jerry Harpur has spent the last twenty years photographing gardens all over the world. During this time his has contributed garden photographs to well over two hundred books, including The Garden Designer, The Ultimate Container Garden, Designing Your Ideal Garden and Gardens by the Sea (all published by Frances Lincoln). He has won many awards for his photography, including the Garden Writers' Guild Lifetime Achievement Award.
