Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Condition of hardback book and dust jacket: As New Corrugated Iron describes the history and recent revival of a building material once revered as a miracle of the industrial age. Corrugated iron is much more than a cheap roofing material. It is a durable, biodegradable and environmentally-sound cladding system, sufficiently versatile to create one-off works of architectural sculpture and to house thousands in disaster zones. It can offer sleek lines, machine production and replicable components and the low-tech aspiration for affordability and ease of construction. Today it is the material of preference for a new generation of architects, who have harnessed its versatility and character for a wide range of residential, corporate and industrial uses. This revival has coincided with an upsurge in enthusiasm for older corrugated iron buildings - which now tend to be either listed or rusting gently into the landscape. Adam Mornement became fascinated by the story of corrugated iron. As well as uncovering remarkable facts from archives around the world, he has interviewed the leading architects in the field and had privileged access to their files. 224pp This book is quite heavy and may be collected from Albert Park, Victoria or from the Rotary Charity Book Shop at Docklands, Melbourne. "In 1829, when Henry Palmer of the London Dock Company was granted the first patent for 'indented or corrugated metallic sheets', he little realized what he was starting. . Within a few years engineers were using corrugated iron to put up vast warehouses and elegant railway stations with cavernous roofs. By the late-1840s entrepreneurial manufacturers were sending out self build cottages for gold prospectors in California, New South Wales and beyond. Whole townships complete with churches, sports pavilions, hotels and meeting halls were soon available from catalogues, to be flat-packed and sent around the world." Book and unclipped dust jacket, are in excellent condition. The jacket is covered with removeable clear plastic for protection. There are no inscriptions and all contents are tight and clean.
