Synopsis

The impetus for this work stemmed from the author's desire to elucidate Laban's theories and the principles on which they are based. The intention of the author is to bring together the philosophy of Rudolf Laban, the principles which derive from it and the movement principles implicit in Laban's own publications. Complementing this central analysis there are considerations of his life, the spread of his ideas and their effect on others. It is hoped that a work which clearly indicates both the scope and the opportunities inherent in movement study and which states, simply, the theories of Rudolf Laban will be helpful to those who teach movement and that it will make a contribution to any subsequent developments of Laban's work. Sam Thornton is at present Senior Lecturer at the Laban Art of Movement Centre. After obtaining a Diploma in Physical Education at St. John's College, York, he taught in this field for nine years. He then studied for a Diploma in Physical Education at Leeds University. Immediately prior to his present appointment he was Senior Lecturer in Movement Education at Bretton Hall College of Education.
