Apparently the first of its kind other than the technical translations noted in its bibliography, this is attractively presented and well illustrated in a National Geographic -type style. After introductory chapters on special subjects (e.g., conservation) come ones on the various regions; all of them are well-written. In such a brief treatment of an enormous topic, the emphasis is on mammals, birds, and general geography. Maps of the regions would have been helpful. The major complaint of most readers interested in the topic will be that the volume should have been twice as long, for it is both educational and entertaining. Suitable for public and undergraduate academic libraries.
