From Library Journal:
Seduced and abandoned by a handsome young physician, James Halden, after her father's death, Sarah Byrne soon finds herself pregnant. Unable to support her daughter, she reluctantly gives the child to the Foundling Hospital, then schemes to remain near her despite the institution's prohibitions against such contact. During the next 20 years, the paths of James, Sarah, and various members of their families intertwine in a multitude of ways. Despite numerous setbacks, Sarah and James eventually acknowledge their love and claim their daughter. Although the details about care of foundling children in mid-19th century England add a unique element to the story, lapses into cliche and stiff phrasing and the heavy dependence on coincidence to advance the plot seriously weaken the novel.
