This Hardinge Simpole Openings Classic reprint represents a landmark in the evolution of openings theory. This ground-breaking treatise on the revolutionary Modern Defence became a Bible for those adventurous players who were prepared to permit the opposition to construct a vast pawn centre - only to dynamite it with violent counter-measures in the middlegame. Such players included Botvinnik, Ivkov, Larsen and Suttles, as well as the two authors who were enthusiastic practitioners of the system.

Hardcover. Condition: VG+. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, black cloth boards with gilt text on spine. Exterior shows minor handling and scuffing although there is some bumping/softening to the corners. There's also a small smudge mark, possibly ink, on the exterior page fore edge. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues. The front pastedown has a postage stamp white sticker near the top center and the opposite end page shows remnants of a price that was once penciled and then later erased. No other markings or handwriting found in the book. We acquired a large collection of chess books over 40 years ago, most of which were then packed away, and the boxes finally opened at the time of this listing - which is why the condition of this book looks like one that was not typically in circulation for all of these years.
