Reviews

Grade 7-9 An interesting way to approach a complex historical event. Here are 15 short biographies of Russians, Britons and Americans who took part in, witnessed or were victims of the Revolution of 1917 and the Civil War, 1918-21. By including the three nationalities, all sides are represented, and unbiased coverage is provided. The text is liberally enhanced with direct quotes from interviews with the participants or from their diaries and memoirs. The writing is clear and uncluttered almost to the point of terseness, but it does not oversimplify. This primary source way of presenting historical material is relatively new to this grade level , but it is an integral part of the series. This approach does not necessarily cover the material any better than another method, but it does give a historical event a unique perspective. Many black-and-white illustrations and photographs elucidate the text. The book ends with notes on Russian politics, a list of important dates and a bibliography that is divided into subject areas.
