Grade 6-10-- A clearly written, well organized account of worldwide human rights issues from a historical perspective up through Gorbachev and "glasnost." Freeman covers the definition of human rights, the kinds of rights, the powers of states, the threats to these rights, the obvious violations in the past and present, as well as what is being done and can be done to insure our rights in the future. With the use of many photographs, document reproductions, posters, etc., Freeman brings this subject to life. The addition of a fairly extensive glossary and further reading list add to the title's overall usefulness. A list of organizations and their addresses that can be consulted for assistance in this area is included. The index, while helpful, is perhaps the weakest link in this otherwise excellent overview of human rights issues from a global perspective.
