Bent Larsen, the Danish grandmaster, is one of the great personalities in modern chess, a formidable tourna-ment player whose outlook is summarised in one of his favourite comments ? 'all pieces are attacking'. In this book he annotates fifty of his own games (the first such collection in English), analysing his development as a player from his days as a twelve-year-old schoolboy up to 1969. These are, he emphasises, only 'selected' games-- his 'best' game has yet to be played ?but by any standard they are of supreme quality, especially those from that extraordinary series of tournament victories, beginning in 1967, during which he defeated the greatest masters of the day, including the former and reigning world champions. The book is arranged chronologically, each chapter prefaced by an account of his progress in the international arena. If, as he claims at one point, more can be learned of a master's style from his annotations than from his games, readers can now obtain a deep appreciation of Larsen's genius: the highly individual treatment of the openings, the use of flank attacks, the superb endgame technique and the'aversion to grandmaster draws. In a final chapter, he discusses the conclusions drawn by friendly commentators on his style, such as his alleged preference for knights and for the early advance of the rooks' pawns. For the ambitious chess player, Larsen's Selected Games, with its wit and its comments on the international chess scene, offers a chance not only to profit from a collection of magnifi-cent games, but also to gain an insight into the mind of the most imaginative world championship contender to have emerged in recent years.
