About the Author

Medical terminology, with its Greek and Latin roots and esoteric prefixes and suffixes, is a major barrier to understanding health information and clinical literature. A good medical dictionary is an essential tool. The new edition of Black’s Medical Dictionary is a useful resource for health-care professionals, students, and educated lay readers. It contains more than 5,000 definitions of medical terms and concepts ranging in length from a few sentences to several paragraphs. It also has more than 1,000 diagrams, drawings, and color illustrations. The new edition is very up-to-date, with information on swine flu (H1N1); the HPV vaccine for protection against human papillomavirus, a cause of cervical cancer; and monoclonal antibodies. It also has an entry for Research fraud and misconduct. The illustrations are small but very clear. Several appendixes provide information about first aid; organizations for support and self-help; travel health; common tests and procedures; vitamins; measurements; and statutory, professional, and health-policy research organizations. Although this is a good dictionary, its British focus makes it less useful for libraries in the U.S. British spelling is used, so readers will have to know that hemoglobin is spelled haemoglobin, fiber is fibre, and pediatrics is paediatrics. All of the resources on the referral lists and the statistics cited in the entries are British, too. A better choice for U.S. libraries is Mosby’s Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing & Health Professions (2008). --Barbara Bibel
