Reviews

Record collectors looking for a handy reference to valuable, obscure rock sin gles and albums should find Rees's work reasonably satisfactory. Several hundred artists and over 18,000 ``rare'' items are listed. Coverage is primarily from the 1960s to the present with ma jor Fifties stars like Elvis and Buddy Holly included. Emphasis is on main stream British and American white rockalmost no soul, r & b, or pop. For each item Rees gives title, label number, release year, and reason for rarity, but not value he wants to pro tect collectors from paying inflated prices quoted in competing guides like Jerry Osborne and Bruce Hamilton's Original Record Collectors Price Guide (1980. 3d ed.), but unless he gives some idea of a record's relative worth un wary users are even more likely to get taken. Nonetheless, a first purchase ahead of the more comprehensive se ries of Osborne/Hamilton titles because of its currency and single-volume cov erage of both singles and albums.
