Book by Boag, David, Alexander, Mike

Puffins are appealing, comical waterbirds of the far North with large, colorful beaks. This commendable book, though rich in authoritative detail, is a popularly written work filled with interesting anecdotes, and illustrated with 70 color photos. Appendixes detail special photo-techniques for above and under water, and maps show breeding areas. This is a fine title for those who do not need the exhaustive treatment of M.P. Harris's excellent The Puffin (Buteo Bks., 1984). Both books have a British orientation, since the authors are English and most puffin research is done in the U.K. Boag is the author of another species life history, The Kingfisher , which was well received. The Atlantic Puffin deserves a wide readership. Highly recommended. Henry T. Armistead, Thomas Jefferson Univ. Lib., Philadelphia
