About the Author
Julio Cortázar (1914-1984), Argentine novelist, poet, essayist, and short-story writer, was born in Brussels, and moved permanently to France in 1951. Cortazar is now recognized as one of the century's major experimental writers, reflecting the influence of French surrealism, psychoanalysis, and his love of both photography and jazz, along with his strong commitment to revolutionary Latin American politics.
Gregory Rabassa was born in Yonkers, New York, March 9, 1922. He grew up north of Hanover, NH, graduated from Dartmouth College, Class of 1944, Phi Beta Kappa, and got his MA, and PhD at Columbia University after serving as a U.S. Army, Infantry, Staff Sgt during World War II. One of Latin American literature’s most distinguished translators, Gregory Rabassa translated more than thirty novels from Spanish and Portuguese into English ― including works by Jorge Amado, Miguel Angel Asturias, Julio Cortázar, and Mario Vargas Llosa. Most notably, he translated Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. Among his many awards, Gregory Rabassa was a Fulbright Fellow, winner of the National Book Award for Translation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Prize, National Book Critics Circle Award, the Gregory Kolovakos Award, PEN. He is currently a Distinguished Professor at Queens College/CUNY and The Graduate School/CUNY.

And then watches, politely, as you realise the pieces may be moving. If you?re expecting a conventional plot with a beginning, middle, and end that line up like obedient dominoes, Cortázar has bad news (and it?s delightful). This is fiction as pattern , echo , collage ? a book where meaning isn?t delivered, it?s assembled. The title is not joking: it?s a model kit. You get characters, scenes, cities, gestures, fragments of conversation, odd coincidences, recurring images, and a strong sense that reality is a little looser than you were promised. The pleasure is in the connections ? and in the fact that the connections are never fully pinned down. Cortázar?s world is cosmopolitan and slightly uncanny: people drift between Paris, London, Vienna (and the mental spaces in between), falling into conversations that feel like puzzles, relationships that feel like déjŕ vu, and moments that seem to carry secret instructions. There?s humour, elegance, and that peculiar Cortázar quality where the everyday can suddenly tilt into the surreal without any dramatic special effects ? just a shift in perception and a sentence that lands a fraction too perfectly. A Model Kit (Marion Boyars, 1994, ISBN: 9780714525310) is perhaps his most mischievous experiment?a ?novel? that functions like its title suggests: as a kit. The pieces are scattered, the instructions cryptic, and the finished object entirely up to the reader. Characters drift across Paris and Vienna, slipping between conversations, dreams, and chance encounters. Plot points appear, vanish, and reassemble like Lego bricks in the hands of a particularly surreal child. This is not a book that holds your hand; it tosses you into the deep end of Cortázar?s imagination and says, ?Swim?or invent water wings.? If you loved Hopscotch but wished it were weirder, this is your jam. If you?ve never read Cortázar, well, buckle up: this is literature as hall of mirrors, equal parts dazzling and disorienting.
